Until I became a homeopath I didn’t really know much about hayfever. I’d heard the term and knew it was something that affected people in the spring and summertime.
During my homeopathy training I learned how effective homeopathy can be at treating the symptoms of hayfever. I also learned about strategies and tips for preventing it.
Since starting my homeopathy practice I have been able to put all this learning to good use in supporting clients with symptoms.
In all honesty though I couldn’t say I was really able to fully empathise with hayfever sufferers as I’d never had symptoms myself. Until a few weeks ago that is!
People often assume hayfever is something that develops in childhood. Like any allergy though, we can be susceptible to developing symptoms at any time in our lives. We may not always know what’s triggered it.
I remember around March time last year my eyes started getting itchy. I bought some Euphrasia eye drops which gave me relief, and I didn’t think anything more of it.
This year I didn’t get itchy eyes at first. I started to feel stuffed up, especially in the mornings, and my nose was itchy on the inside. Then I started to sneeze a lot more frequently. And when I sneezed my nose started streaming. And then I got itchy eyes.
Does this resonate with you?
Treating the symptoms
In hindsight I now see I was starting to become more sensitive last year.
I am very thankful to have remedies to take to alleviate my symptoms. The intensity has reduced and I am sneezing and feeling itchy much less often.
Everyone experiences hayfever differently. The wonderful thing about homeopathy is that it treats the individual – it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
What bothers you the most? Are your eyes itchy and sore? Do you feel stuffed up and your nose and throat are itchy? Do you sneeze so much it’s embarrassing?
Whatever your symptoms, there’s a remedy that can help.
As well as supporting clients with their symptoms during the spring / summer, I give them a sequence of remedies to take during the winter.
This helps desensitise the body and strengthen its resistance to pollen and other allergens. It deals with the underlying susceptibility to getting hayfever symptoms in the first place.
Now I know I am susceptible to hayfever I will definitely be following my own prevention programme this winter!
